Initially, there was no football ground at Cascavelle where the inhabitants could play or enjoy some football matches. However, some 30 years ago, this has been made possible and till now, we are still enjoying its facilities.
The place where the actual football ground is located was long ago covered with sugarcane fields and that portion of land belonged to the Medine Sugar Estates (MSE). The cane field was situated amidst the village and it was quite difficult for the sugar company to maintain because the inhabitants used to complain of the dusts that arose during harvest seasons. Thus, the MSE decided to hand over the field (but the company remains the owner) to the local inhabitants so that they can develop that piece of land into a football pitch. And it was the members of Cascavelle Youth Club (founded in 1982) who decided to covert this dream into reality.
Eventually, after the 1985 harvest season, the land was given to the inhabitants but it came along with its roots, weeds and other undesired grasses and wastes. From that onwards, the members of the CYC started their work – they started uprooting and cleaning the field to make it a playable place. However, they still faced problems because the neighbouring people complained that the dust that arose during football matches affected them.
Then, the CYC members came up with the idea of grassing the land. The members took the resolution to come every Sunday and cover the land with grasses, which they did at any cost. They even went to the extent of eating only 2 “Cabine” biscuits each and a bottle of coke for 10 persons. Afterwards, when the football ground was all set, the MSE extended its help by mowing the field regularly to enable the inhabitants to enjoy a better facility.
Unfortunably the CYC club does no longer exists, but its members made a lot of sacrifices so that we, the new generation and the forthcoming generations can enjoy the facilities of the Cascavelle Football Ground. And we should thank them for their efforts, sacrifices and their mind-blowing work.
