Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean, 855 kilometers in the east of Madagascar in front of the east coast of Africa, nearly 5000 kilometers far from Bombay in India, nearer to Australia than to Europe. It is a small volcano island of the size 47 to 64 kilometers. Our paradise island is surrounded by the world's warmest sea.
The village of Cascavelle is situated on the feet of the Mountain of Rempart, on of the mountains in the chain of mountains of Black River. The village is one of the 16 villages of the Black River District in the western part of the island Mauritius.
Cascavelle has around 2700 inhabitants in the 4 sub-locations Beaux-Songes, Camp Creoles (Upper Cascavelle), Camp Bombaie (Lower Cascavelle) and Xavier.
The name Cascavelle derives from a yellow flower that was found in the village a long time ago and reaches a hight of 1.3 meter. The latin name is Crotalania Restusa. It is a wedge-leaf rattlepod (a weed). The French called this flower «Casse-cavelle» , the English «Cascavelle »
The well known Casela-Bird Parc is belonging to the grounds of the village just as the oldest indian church of the country, which was build in 1902.
